UK ETA or Visitor Visa? A Holiday Planning Guide
Find the official route for checking UK holiday entry permission, then prepare your application and travel plans without confusing an ETA with a visa.
Start with the official checker
Check whether you need a UK visa on GOV.UK. Follow the result through to the official application service. Use the passport you intend to travel with and answer for the purpose of this trip. Being resident in another country is not the same thing as holding that country’s nationality.
Do this for every person travelling, including children. Do not assume a partner’s or parent’s permission covers another traveller. If you hold more than one nationality or already have UK immigration status, use the specific official guidance for your circumstances rather than a generic tourist checklist.
ETA and visitor visa: different decisions
| Route | What to understand | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| ETA | A travel authorisation for eligible travellers; it does not itself grant entry. | Read the current eligibility and application instructions on GOV.UK. |
| Standard Visitor visa | An application route for visitors who need a visa for their proposed visit. | Check eligibility, supporting information, fees and the application process. |
| No ETA or visitor visa required | Some travellers are exempt or travel under a different status. | Confirm the exemption applies to your passport and circumstances; carry the required travel documents. |
A connection through the UK can involve different rules from a holiday. Use the official checker for transit rather than treating an airport connection as automatically exempt. Travel via Ireland or the Crown Dependencies can also need separate consideration.
Prepare a visitor-visa application
As checked on 5 September 2026, GOV.UK lists the standard six-month visitor visa fee as £135 and says the earliest application point is three months before travel. Your passport or travel document must be valid throughout your UK stay. Always recheck the application page for changes.
Use the official document guidance for your case. Avoid buying non-refundable travel solely to create paperwork. Keep your intended dates, accommodation plan, funding and reason for visiting consistent and truthful. A holiday budget worksheet can help organise your thinking, but it is not an official financial threshold or evidence of approval.
Do not confuse a processing estimate with a promised decision date. Follow the current service instructions and avoid relying on a third-party article’s old price table.
Make sure the permission fits the visit
A tourist holiday, a long course and moving to work in the UK are different plans. Some study and business activities are permitted under visitor rules, but the details matter. Check the permitted activities and restrictions rather than relying on blanket claims that visitors can never study or can freely work.
This guide is for holiday planning. If your main purpose is employment, marriage, a long course or living in the UK, start with the corresponding official route. The label “tourist visa” should not be used to hide a different purpose.
Avoid common preparation mistakes
- Using an unofficial application site without noticing its service charge.
- Assuming a previous permission applies to a new passport or different trip.
- Copying another traveller’s document list without checking your own situation.
- Treating a successful application as a promise of admission at the border.
- Confusing permission costs with the money available for the holiday itself.
Save the official confirmation and follow its instructions. Before departure, recheck the documents you will use to travel and your airline’s requirements. Once the entry route is clear, plan arrival transport and a realistic UK holiday budget.
