A straightforward guide to the two terminals, the airport shuttle and choosing a London train that actually suits where you are staying.
My local view: Gatwick is easy by London standards
Gatwick is one of my favourite UK airports because the route into central London is simple and the airport is manageable once you understand the two-terminal layout. I prefer North Terminal: it feels larger and more open to me, and it is currently the terminal listed for easyJet. South Terminal feels more compact, but it has the practical advantage of being attached to the airport railway station.
Keep the distinction clear: the terminal impressions above are personal experience. Airline locations, rail services and shuttle arrangements are operational facts checked against official sources on the review date.
North or South Terminal?

Your airline and flight determine the terminal, not personal preference. Check the live flight information or boarding pass before travelling because terminal assignments can change.
The terminals are connected by a free shuttle
People often call it a train, but Gatwick describes it as the inter-terminal shuttle. It is an automated people mover reserved for travelling between North and South terminals.
- Journey time: about two minutes.
- Frequency: every few minutes.
- Operating hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- From North: follow signs for South Terminal or the railway station.
- From South: the shuttle station is close to the railway station.
You do not need a rail ticket for the terminal shuttle. Allow extra time for walking, lifts, waiting and luggage rather than treating the two-minute ride as the whole transfer.
Choose your London train by destination
Gatwick has more useful direct London choices than many visitors realise. Official airport guidance gives an average London journey time of roughly 30–45 minutes, but the best service depends on where your hotel is and whether disruption changes the route.

Local planning rule: search Gatwick Airport to your hotel, not simply Gatwick Airport to London. A slightly longer direct train can be easier than a faster service followed by a Tube change with luggage.
Contactless and Oyster can be used for eligible journeys between Gatwick and London. Use the same card or device to tap in and out, and compare the live fare with a conventional rail ticket before travelling. Contactless is not valid for every destination beyond London.
A simple arrival route
- Complete immigration, baggage reclaim and customs. Do not build the train plan around the scheduled landing time.
- Confirm your terminal. At South, follow railway-station signs. At North, follow signs for the free shuttle to South.
- Search your final London destination. Compare Victoria, London Bridge and the Thameslink stations through central London.
- Check live disruption before paying. Engineering work can change the sensible route, especially late at night or at weekends.
- Keep one payment method consistent. If tapping, use the same physical card or the same phone at both barriers.
Five Gatwick mistakes to avoid
- Looking for the mainline station at North Terminal. It is at South; use the free shuttle.
- Assuming the shuttle is part of the rail network. It is a free airport transfer and needs no train ticket.
- Buying Gatwick Express by default. Southern or Thameslink may suit your destination or budget better.
- Travelling to Victoria when the hotel is near London Bridge or Farringdon. Compare the whole route with luggage.
- Relying on a remembered terminal. Check the flight because airline arrangements can change.
