Start with a room that works for the family

Record adults, children and their ages at travel. Check the property's maximum occupancy and the actual beds provided: a family-room label does not establish separate bedrooms. Confirm cot availability, any extra charge, balcony access, lift access and room location directly with the property where relevant.

Apartment or all-inclusive: compare what you will use

For self-catering, confirm the cooking equipment, fridge, supermarket route and whether you intend to cook. For all-inclusive, list the included meals, snacks, drinks and serving hours. Add meals needed on arrival and departure and those eaten away from the hotel. The same meal must not appear in both a package total and an extra food allowance.

Compare family travel rather than adult headline prices

• Use an airline or package quote for the whole party. Do not multiply an adult promotional price or apply an assumed child discount.
• Check the airline's own baggage, pushchair and seating terms before paying.
• Obtain a transfer quote for the complete party and luggage; ask the operator about any child-seat requirement and availability.
• Check your school's published holiday dates, and price the departure-airport journey and parking as well as the flights.
• Record total door-to-door time separately from money. A late arrival or long transfer may outweigh a small saving for your family.

Choose the base around daily routines

Compare the walk to the beach, groceries and evening meals on a map, then confirm difficult details with the hotel. For a child who naps, room access and shade can matter more than the number of advertised attractions. Ask for the age limits, booking requirements and seasonal dates of children's facilities instead of treating a kids' club as guaranteed childcare.

Questions before booking

Does the calculator discount children?

No. Enter a real whole-party quote or the actual relevant unit price. Its equal per-person split is a budgeting average, not the fare each child will pay.

Is a kitchen always cheaper than all-inclusive?

No. Compare what you will actually buy and use, including transport to shops, meals out and any mandatory extras.
